An extraordinary 2 CD collection of new recordings & rarity tracks, including the 1940’s “Why Do I Love You” original track from Les Paul & His Trio and the little known track “Gutty Guitar” featuring Jeff Beck with Lord Sutch from the Jimmy Page produced sessions “Lord Sutch & Heavy Friend”. While many modern day American drum and bass DJs fight for the title of "don", the true American Emperor of Drum and bass is still standing! In 1994, he released the Jungle Liquid Sky Ethiopia 12", being the first release on Jungle Sky Records, and at that, the first American drum and bass production on vinyl. Since then, he has released countless singles, and albums collaborating with everyone from Afrika Bambaataa, Ali Khan, Elliot Sharp, Bill Laswell, Bernie Worell (Funkadelic), Grand Master DST, Derek Bailey, William Burroughs, Ziggy Marley, Deee-Lite, and many others.

GUITAR MASTERS, VOL. 1
various artists
Label: BHP Music
Release date: May 15, 2007

Price:$12.99 ADD TO CART

Description:
For fearless explorers of the musical unknown, a perfect compilation of artistry is a collection of performances that pummels your unsuspecting little ass with shock waves of awe and wonder. Rather than document the obvious—or sate the expectations of the casual enthusiast—every track challenges, puzzles, thrills, inspires, and, ultimately, delights the listener. This strategy is especially critical when dealing with the recordings of bona fide guitar heroes, as those cats are carefully crafted with angelic DNA to shift musical gears, juggle styles, and blow minds. A “greatest hits” package might make commercial sense for casual fans or greedy record companies, but it also does a grave disservice to the vast and diverse pool of creativity transcendent musicians employ to advance their art.

Guitar Masters, Vol. 1 aggressively celebrates the art of guitar and bass by serving up 18 tracks of unfettered—and often astonishing—brilliance. And there are plenty of surprises. Metal madman Zakk Wylde unleashing his ferocious chops on a Stevie Wonder tune? The spectacularly innovative Jeff Beck laying sexy licks onto a Toots & the Maytals reggae groove? Jazz bass legend Stanley Clarke trading propulsive funk lines with shredmaster Joe Satriani? Uber-technical prog icon Allan Holdsworth sharing space on a CD with former Led Zeppelin multi-instrumentalist John Paul Jones, funky jazzer John Scofield, Tele terror Will Ray, and rock wizard Steve Morse? You also get treated to Marcus Nand's Latin motifs on “Rumba,” Violet Samudra and Steve Booke's thrilling East Indian adventure “Picture of a Purple Sky,” the smooth jazz of Martin Winch's “Stay With Me,” and the beautiful melodicism of Carl Tosten's “What Can I Say” and Jason Carter's “Kruununvuori.” Finally, headbangers can get off on Doug Stapp's killer version of “Frankenstein,” James Ryan's trippy “Space Talk,” Doug Doppler's industrial shred-fest “Zero Gravity,” and Guitar Masters producer Brian Tarquin's rock/electronica hybrid “Jack Hammer” (which was recorded at his Jungle Room Studios in New York ).

On Guitar Masters, Tarquin has done a fabulous job of casting the guitar in all its beatific and aggro glory. Through these fascinating lineups and one-of-a-kind performances, you intimately hear—and feel —the guitar as an always evolving, ever-magical apparatus of passion, guts, and sensitivity.

Michael Molenda, Editor in Chief of Guitar Player Magazine (CD Review)

Guitar Masters, Vol.2

GUITAR MASTERS, VOL. 2
various artists
Label: BHP Music
Release date: April 14, 2008

Price: $9.99 ADD TO CART

Description:
When many guitar fans think of “guitar masters,” the default perception is the wingo-wingo-diddley-diddley variety of shredder who has an entire library of fabulous guitar faces. Brian Tarquin has a different take on the “master” label, which is why his GUITAR MASTERS series is inspiring, thrilling, and extremely musical.

Tarquin seeks out transcendent players in all styles and levels of notoriety — known or unknown, just breaking out or near forgotten, and all points in between — to deliver a mesmerizing onslaught of tones, techniques, and melodic journeys. As a result, guitar nuts are treated to an sonic master class of stunning riffs, solos, and motifs — all fresh material for ripping off and evolving into their own guitaristic “trick bags” -- while guitar fans get an exciting and diverse listening experience unmatched by most genre-specific compilations. The 14 tracks on GUITAR MASTERS, Vol. 2 zig-zag between the intense passion and Latin-rock fusion of a young Carlos Santana, the stark yet ecstatic sting of B.B. King working his magic live, the twang-and-skank of country virtuoso Pete Anderson, and the twin-harmony fusillades of Jimmy and Johnny Ryan. You also get blues moves by Larry McCray and JW Jones, a classic 1970 Jimmy Page/Jeff Beck collaboration, a shred-tastic romp by Michael Lee Firkens and Neil Zaza, and Tarquin’s own electrifying workouts with former Jeff Beck keyboardist Max Middleton and Dixie Dregs/Deep Purple fretburner Steve Morse. And, finally, rock and hard-rock disciples can be schooled by former Dire Straits guitarist Hal Lindes, Beat the Bone, Alex De Rosso, and a ripping version of Van Halen’s “Light Up the Sky” by Yngwie Malmsteen, Billy Sheehan, and Doug Pinnick.

As with GUITAR MASTERS, Vol. 1, Tarquin’s talent for compiling brilliant and impassioned guitar moments brings out all that is glorious and holy about the act of playing guitar extremely well. While it’s a different set of moods and approaches you’ll hear on GUITAR MASTERS, Vol. 2, every note, phrase, tone color, and impact of pick and/or finger on string will send shivers down your spine. You’d have to be dead or deaf not to be moved by the beautiful noises you’ll hear on this loud and proud CD.

ASPHALT JUNGLE
BOB MARLEY REMIXED
Label: BHP Music
Release date: June 12, 2007

The music of Bob Marley starts with the unmistakable sound of his voice. Resplendent with soul, aching with passion, soothingly triumphant, Marley’s singing was a beacon that brought the eyes of the world to Jamaica, and introduced billions of ears to reggae.

But what would happen if his legendary vocal recordings were made available to 21st Century forces -- set free to take the classic sound of Bob Marley to unexpected, unimagined new places? Asphalt Jungle (www.bohemianproductions.net), the pioneering NYC electronic duo of Brian Tarquin and Chris Ingram, were granted unprecedented access to the Marley tape vault, and embarked on a mission to do just that.

The resulting 12 songs of “Bob Marley Remixed” is a masterful set, where the awe of respect and the spirit of adventure build continuously on each other, a spiraling musical DNA that leads from island roots to drum ‘n’ bass, big beat, techno, rock and beyond. “You can do a remix on a classic,” Tarquin says. “Bob Marley is one of those rare things that breaks barriers and transcends formats, so we dropped the formalities. What better artist to do a record like this with?”

Asphalt Jungle went deeper into the Marley catalog to create “Remixed”, hoping to show both devoted fans and new generations of listeners that there was a lot more to reggae’s international ambassador than just his biggest hits. The exuberant new charge of “Mr. Brown”, laid out over lightning fast beats and dance floor-ready synths come as a pleasant shock, while the breezy drum ‘n’ bass underpinnings, flutes and funky basses of “Move” bring fresh urgency to Marley’s hopeful vocals. “Duppy Conquerer” is just huge in the hands of Asphalt Jungle, where Bob soars over a big, dirty, slow hand 4/4 rock beat. Meanwhile, “Put it On” has resurfaced as a sunglasses-at-night club cruiser, with agilely marauding bass lines, hip-swaying grooves, constant ear candy and a percussion battery that gives Marley’s voice dramatically dark spaces to move through.

The long list of surprises of “Bob Marley Remixed” goes on and on, a fittingly advanced environment for a timeless singer in the new millennium. “Bob Marley’s vocals are so soulful, such an amazing vehicle for the storytelling he weaves, they just seem to rise above everything else,” says Tarquin. “Hearing his voice in a fresh context is incredibly inspirational. With these remixes it’s just like he’s in the room, singing to you for the first time all over again.”

David Weiss, editor of Mix Magazine (CD Liner Notes)

Get The Led Out!

GET THE LED OUT! Led Zeppelin Salute
various artists
Label: BHP Music
Release date: February 19, 2008

"A superb tribute to Led Zeppelin. One of the greatest rock
instrumental albums in recent memory."

The concept of taking twelve celebrated numbers from the Zeppelin songbook and reworking them sans vocals works wonders on Get The Led Out! - Led Zeppelin Salute. Renowned for his great ears and studio expertise, producer guitarist Brian Tarquin assembled a sweeping array of classic Zeppelin covers as performed by some of rock's cutting edge guitar stars. Leslie West and Randy Coven visited Tarquin's New York Jungle Room Studios to lay down parts on a new “Moby Dick” while James Ryan cut an instrumental “Black Dog” at his studio in Australia. Martin Winch recorded his version of “Kashmir” in New Zealand while Hal Lindes recorded “Babe I'm Gonna Leave You” at his Venice Beach studio. Such is the international appeal of Led Zeppelin. No doubt Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones will get a kick out of hearing these hard rocking instrumental versions of their classic originals. It's a testimony to Page and Jones that these timeless melodies and unforgettable arrangements sound ripe today as rock fusion and world beat style instrumentals nearly 40 years after they first appeared on a Led Zeppelin album. Brian Tarquin's deft touch in the studio brings out the sonic luster, adding to the instrumental rock wizardry in play on Get The Led Out! As a boon for Zeppelin fans, Get The Led Out! adds in four vintage bonus cuts—three from 1970 with Jimmy Page, Daniel Edwards, John Bonham and singer David “Lord” Sutch and one from ‘68 with John Paul Jones and singer Keith de Groot—presenting an interesting twist to this classic CD tribute.

Fretworx

BRIAN TARQUIN PRESENTS FRETWORX
various artists
Label: BHP Music/NuGroove
Release date: October 14, 2008

A Collection of songs inspired by the events of 9/11

This set of original instrumental recordings was written and arranged by Tarquin, anEmmy-award winning composer and guitarist, is a both melodic and sensitive in scope and much more listenable that most music currently on the radio. In the sixteen original compositions, Tarquin is ably assisted by a bevy of well-known names from rock music, the like of which include Billy Sheehan, Frank Gambale, Steve Morse, Will Ray, Hal Lindes, and Randy Coven among others. With friends like that, as you might say, you get a can’t-miss album full of great music. Standouts here are “Constantinople” with Ray on slide guitar, “Towers” with Morse, and “Jungle Room Boogie” featuring keyboardist Max Middleton. The great thing here is that even though the cuts have multiple players taking solos, there is never any sense of competition or cutting going on. Everyone plays to the song and Tarquin’s years of composing for film and television really come through here as his melodies rise and turn, then ease downward and are resolved while offering great building blocks for a variety of solo turns by guests. As if that wasn’t enough, the CD also includes bonus tracks by Steve Vai, Carlos Santana, and Tommy Bolin. Sound is uniformly excellent overall, a tribute to Tarquin’s use of analog recording and mixing. There is still nothing quite like the sound music recorded on tape. Finally, this is a CD release with a special meaning. Part of the proceeds from sales will be donated to Friends of Firefighters, a charitable group in New York City.

El Becko

EL BECKO - A JEFF BECK SALUTE
various artists
Label: BHP Music/NuGroove
Release date: October 14, 2008

In this new release from Brian Tarquin’s BHP MUSIC label, some of the finest guitarists offer their interpretations of songs previously recorded by Jeff Beck.  The results show the full range of the guitarist’s capabilities, and these guys are all over the fretboard, but they vary in range.  The talented Tarquin spews notes all over in “You Know What I Mean” as well as “Blue Wind” and “Play With Me” in a way that nods to Beck but brings a newer interpretation while Doug Doppler offers a fine read of “People Get Ready” that doesn’t add much to the Beck version.  Things get much more interesting on the Beck tour de force “Scatterbrain” here arranged for strings and performed on violins.  It really works, as does the nylon string guitar take on “You Never Know/Nadia.”  Although the songs covered are mostly from Beck’s solo period, certain of the albums seem to lend themselves to a particular sound.  Songs from Beck’s Wired album translate well to an over-the-top reading that is heavy on amplification, sustain, and frantic playing while some of the later material from the eighties and nineties offer more interpretation for dynamics and taste.  But there is no shortage of hot-shoe guitar playing on this tribute and, were he interested, Beck would be pleased.
